Knee osteoarthritis involves inflammation as well as pain. A review of 3 research reports highlights that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation due to osteoarthritis decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Specifically, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who stuck to a Mediterranean diet show a lowered risk of deteriorating knee pain at four years follow up. For those who did not have knee osteoarthritis at the start of the 4 years project and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% lowered risk of acquiring knee osteoarthritis was found. (3) Overall, a higher faithfulness to a Mediterranean diet is affiliated with better quality of life and less pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
